The historically stable Japan-US alliance is now under threat: first, by North Korea and its nuclear ambitions, and second by the US withdrawal from the TPP agreement. What will it take to maintain and strengthen the vital Japan-US relationship?
Japan and the United States have maintained a strong alliance based on shared values of freedom, democracy and market economy, contributing to security in East Asia and prosperity around the world.
Today, the East Asian security situation is under unprecedented threat by North Korea which rejects all calls from the international community to desist in its nuclear and missiles development programs. How can our two countries best work together to ensure security and stability in the region?
In the economic sphere, the revitalization of Japan’s economy is one of the highly important priorities for Japan’s Abe administration. It has been promoting TPP, an agreement for freer trade and investment flows in the region, as the key driving force for the Asia Pacific economies, including Japan itself. With the US’s withdrawal from TTP, what will the future hold for Japan-US economic relations?
Mr. Shotaro Oshima, who served as a Japanese diplomat in various countries affecting East Asian security, such as the United States, the Russian Federation and the Korean Republic, and also as a trade negotiator in bilateral and multilateral negotiations, will explore these topics and share his thoughts on the potential opportunities and challenges the Japan US relationship will face and the importance of continued US leadership in Asia.
